Senior Band

The Clifton and Lightcliffe Band is based in a small village just outside Brighouse in West Yorkshire, England, this is only a few miles away from the home of the world famous Brighouse and Rastrick and the Black Dyke Band.

It is thought that C & L was formed in 1838 when most of the inhabitants of the villages around were employed in either agriculture or coal mining, the formation of the band was a way to escape from the hard work and poor conditions at that time.

In the early 1900’s the band competed and won a few major prizes at the famous Crystal Palace in London, where the National Brass Band Championships were held each year. More recently the band qualified for the National Championships in 2001, 2006 and again in 2007.

The band has also toured abroad.  2001 saw both bands performing in France and Switzerland, In 2004 the senior band were invited to Guernsey to perform a major fund-raising concert for Oxfam and in July 2006 the senior band had an 8 day concert tour to Zell am See in Austria, performances included the Mirabel Gardens in Salzburg where the famous Sound of Music was filmed. July 2008 will see the band performing at Lake Garda, Italy.

In 1932 the band moved into its present headquarters at Bailiff Bridge and over its long history it can say with pride that a number of its members have made the grade and gone on to a number of top flight bands.

The organisation already has a busy calendar for 2007, and the senior band are producing their first CD at the end of April when a special commission for the band called The Rise of the Phoenix by Darrol Barry will be recorded, this has been made possible with generous funding from the Lottery Commission which was approved in November 2006.
