Brighouse Gala brings Big Brass!
On the 15th September the band raised £875.00 at the Brighouse Gala with a coconut shy and tombola stall and on top of this Barclays Bank said they would match what we made up to a maximum of £750.00.

We would like to thank everyone who helped to make this possible, in particular Barclays Bank and Julia and Rob Wood for their fantastic efforts.

National Finals Harrogate
The band competed in the 3rd Section National Finals in Harrogate at the weekend and was placed 11th out of a field of 18 finalists from all over the country.

The band was drawn to play in the dreaded number one spot and performed Bruce Frazer’s Imperium very well. The comments from the two adjudicators Alan Hope and Chris Davis were encouraging.

As we have performed so well over the last two years, the band has been promoted to the second section from January 2008.

Finally would like to send our congratulations to Middleton Band who won the section.

Band awarded grant of £5,000.
The band has been awarded the sum of £5,000 from the Community Foundation for Calderdale for the purchase of two new euphoniums. The grant has been awarded from the Kathleen Mary Denham Fund. Mrs Denham was a Lightcliffe resident and supported the local community for many years. Thanks must be expressed to the Foundation for giving the band this grant and also to our fund-raising co-ordinator Mrs Frances Rogers for all her hard work.

Band Re-union
The Clifton and Lightcliffe band would like to contact as many ex-members as possible as they are hosting a re-union on Friday 9th November 2007 at the Brighouse Sports Club.

It is believed the band was formed in 1838 and is still going strong today having qualified for the 3rd section National Finals for the second year running.

In 1977 John Clay founded the Clifton and Lightcliffe junior band who celebrate 30 years of music making in September. The association has also been rehearsing at its present headquarters at Bailiff Bridge for 75 years in September and these two events make a good excuse for having a party.

Secretary Jane Clay would like to hear from any ex-members senior or junior band to invite them along to the re-union. Jane can be contacted on jane.clay@gower-furniture.co.uk or john366clay@btinternet.com

CD Dedication
The Rise of the Phoenix is dedicated to all the members and friends who have been loyal to the band over many years through the good and sometimes difficult times. As the title suggests, the Phoenix was a fabulous mythical bird, who every morning at dawn sang a song so enchanting that even the sun god Apollo would stop and listen.

The bird would live for hundreds of years and at the end of its life would build a pyre, set it on fire and be consumed by the flames. After three days the Phoenix would be reborn from the ashes to sing once more.

In much the same way since 1838 the Clifton and Lightcliffe band has had difficulties and has been reborn to make music once more. This has only been accomplished by the dedication of its players, officials and friends.

Over the years all the Musical Directors have played a pivotal role in the band’s history and this piece of music is dedicated to each and every one of them. We feel the need to mention James Nuttall, James Hickman, John Clay who formed the junior section which trains and provides players for the senior band and who is the current senior band conductor, and Bernard Lawson. These men have contributed so much to the ongoing future of the band and this is our way of thanking them.

Lottery Grant
The band has been awarded a grant from the Lottery Commission of £4,500. The application was put together by our fund-raising co-ordinator Frances Rogers. With this grant the band is to make its first CD, and part of the funds received includes the finance for a commission which the band has had written by Darrol Barry.

Darrol has composed quite a difficult but very interesting piece called The Rise of the Phoenix, which will also be the title of the CD. This will be recorded along with a host of other pieces which the band has in its repertoire at present, also featured will be young soprano singer Rachel Crisp.

The CD will be recorded in the Brighouse and Rastrick band room at the end of April.
